CRIMINAL COURT CLERK OFFICE

The Knox County Criminal Court Clerk's office is losing millions of dollars annually to non collection of fees assessed by our courts. I am referring to a report completed in Oct.'07 by the National Center for State Courts (NCSC) titled: Collections Management--General Sessions Court, Knox County, TN. The report includes 17 recommendations to improve management and collections in the Court Clerk's office. The number of recommendations implemented since the completion of this report is not known. It is apparent to me that the Court Clerk's office is in need of accountability and oversite.

Filing a salary suit to guarantee the financial obligations of this office is not acceptable to me. Over 70,000 cases come before the courts and are managed through this office. It should be self-sustaining as well as an additional revenue stream for the county. This office openly campaigned against the ordinance passed by County Commission which implemented the Victims Assistance Fund. I believe it was a conflict of interest for the Criminal Court Clerk to be involved. Other counties are already collecting monies from this fund and Knox County should do the same.

We need restoration of trust in elected officials and I do not believe leaving the present clerk in office will accomplish that goal. I can do this job. I ask for your support to effect more positive change for the citizens of Knox County.
